Circular Knives

Circular knives are precision cutting tools with a round or disc-shaped geometry. They are used in rotating cutting systems for slitting, cutting, trimming, perforating and separating a wide range of materials.
Circular knives are used in many industrial applications, including paper and cardboard processing, packaging, plastics and film processing, textile production, recycling, metal processing and other converting applications.
Depending on the application, circular knives can be manufactured from different materials such as tool steel, chrome steel, stainless steel, high-speed steel (HSS), HSS PM or carbide. The appropriate material depends on the material being cut, the cutting process, operating conditions and the required wear resistance and service life.

Circular Knives for Industrial Applications

Circular knives are used in a wide range of cutting systems and can be designed for different cutting principles. Depending on the application, they can operate against a counter knife, anvil or another circular knife.

Typical applications include:

  • Slitting and longitudinal cutting
  • Cross-cutting
  • Trimming
  • Perforating
  • Paper and cardboard cutting
  • Film and foil cutting
  • Plastic processing
  • Textile processing
  • Recycling and material processing
  • Metal cutting

The knife diameter, thickness, bore, cutting angle and edge geometry can be adapted to the respective machine and application.

Circular Knife Designs
Depending on the cutting system, circular knives may be designed as slitting knives, disc knives, perforating knives, rotary knives or special circular blades.
Some applications use a pair of circular knives, while others use a circular knife together with a counter knife or anvil. Knife holders, spacers and knife shafts can also be adapted to the specific machine configuration.
The correct knife geometry is important for achieving a clean cut, low cutting forces and consistent production performance.

Materials for Circular Knives
The choice of material has a significant influence on knife performance and service life.
Depending on the application, circular knives can be manufactured from:

  • Tool steel
  • Chrome steel
  • Stainless steel
  • High-speed steel (HSS)
  • HSS PM
  • Carbide

For highly abrasive materials or applications requiring extended service life, carbide or other highly wear-resistant materials may be appropriate.

Custom Circular Knives

We manufacture custom circular knives according to customer drawings, specifications or samples. Dimensions, bore diameters, knife thickness, cutting angles and edge geometries can be produced to suit the individual machine and cutting application.
We manufacture circular knives for both standard and special applications and can advise on suitable materials and cutting geometries based on the material being processed and the required cutting performance.

Grinding and Regrinding of Circular Knives
Precision grinding is essential for producing an accurate cutting edge and maintaining consistent knife geometry. Depending on the design and remaining dimensions, circular knives can often be reground several times.
Professional regrinding can extend the service life of circular knives, maintain cutting quality and reduce replacement costs.
If you require industrial circular knives, slitting knives or custom rotary cutting blades, send us your drawing, sample or technical requirements.
